Clip 2 – 4 September 2018 - Law 11

Lionel Mapoe of the Golden Lions breaks and passes to scrumhalf Dillon Smit on his inside. Faced by defenders, Smit chips but does not clear Manie Libbok, the Blue Bulls' flyhalf, who jumps up and with his hands bats the ball forward.

He then stretches out to catch the ball but knocks it on. The referee awards a scrum to the Golden Lions.

There is no knock-on when Libbok bats the kick forward.

Law 11 KNOCK-ON

The ball is not knocked-on, and play continues, if:

  • A player knocks the ball forward immediately after an opponent has kicked it (charge down).

The knock-on occurs when after charging the ball down, Libbok tries to get possession of it. His action then is not a charge-down or part of the act of charging the ball down. He is trying to catch hold of it.

LAW DEFINITION

Knock-on: When a player loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand or arm and goes forward, and the ball touches the ground or another player before the original player can catch it.
